ENGL 3130: BUSINESS WRITING

SUMMER 2020

3 Credit Hours | Prerequisite: ENGL 1102 or 1103

This course differs in both content and approach from many other writing classes. There is no monolithic body of ‘business writing’ to study, because generally speaking, business writing is largely transactional.

The goal of business writing is to communicate in an efficient and effective manner, and what the specifics of that entail is highly dependent upon context. This means that the best business writing is a function of keen audience awareness.

I teach this course from the perspective that writing and thinking go hand-in-hand. They are in a dance in which it is difficult to see which partner is leading. You’ll develop your skills in critical thinking, persuasion, argumentation, and analysis in parallel with your ability to write correctly in Standard Written English with accuracy, concision, coherence, and clarity.
